Build a shelf supporting heavy things with no studs?

So I have 2 metal brackets I want to put in the wall and place a decorative board across it which will support a Tivo and small dvd player. This would be 10-20lbs I think. The brackets would be screwed only into drywall. There is no stud I would be able to hit. How can I accomplish this shelf?
