How do I explain our situation without being disrespectful?

Been there, done that. 4 1/2 years into it, we got married. Look, parents mean well, but it is your life and your relationship. I was a preacher at one point, but I can happily say that even then I did not condemn people for their life choices as I am not God. Best of luck to you, and I hope things work out great!
