Good ole Fred Phelps and crew.?
The Supreme Court has agreed to take up a case involving free speech at military funerals. Here is the situation. The Westwood Baptist Church located in Topeka, Kansas has been actively and loudly protesting at the funerals of military families. They claim that the reason the soldiers are dying is that God hates gays and since the US is tolerant of gays that this is God’s way of sending a message to the U.S. So, they show up at the funerals of soldiers with signs and loud voices. Naturally, this doesn’t sit well with the families who are mourning the loss of their loved ones. Hells Angels have started to attend some of the funerals to set up barricades between the protesters and the funeral. Recently, one father sued the church and won the first case, but list on appeal. On appeal the court ruled that the father had to pay the legal fees of the Westwood Baptist Church. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case. Under our Constitution, should the protests be permitted to continue as a right of free speech or should the funerals be allowed to be considered private events where free speech is not permitted?
