How long do dissolve able stitches/sutures take to dissolve?

I had a hysterectomy on 3/24. On 3/31 the surgeon removed my staples but had to stitch me back up. She told me the stitches could stay in for a couple of weeks. On 4/6 I saw a different doctor in the group who checked the wound. He said that the stitches would dissolve on their own and didn't need to be removed. They are still there! I am just wondering how long it takes stitches to dissolve. My worry is that the second doctor was wrong, because he wasn't the one who put them in. I have another appointment next week, but was just wondering because the site is very tender.
