Why do so many black women wear fake hair weaves and wigs?

It seems like almost always if I see an afro american woman with straight hair, or long hair, it's a weave or wig. I know that some non-afro-americans wear false hair too, but with black women, it's almost always not her own hair if it's long, wavy, or otherwise not nappy and afro. I'm just curious as to why that so many black women don't want to wear their God-given african hair as it was intended in a natural afro. If women complain about men wearing toupees as being dishonest, then it's just as dishonest for any woman to pretend to have long silky hair and then let the guy get interested only to find out she has a butch haircut or something. Why do so many black women wear fake hair weaves and wigs? Almost all of my afro-american female friends wear that false hair, but most of my white friends have natural hair. Are black women not proud to wear the hair that the Almighty blessed upon their heads?
